Why Startups Should Care About Identity

During the chaos of building your startup it is the nature of the beast to take risks and hustle hard. That means not playing by the same set of rules that larger businesses play by. On one hand you are gifted with extreme and unmatched agility, on the other, you’re accruing various degrees of debt (technical, logistical, and ultimately financial debt) that will need to be ironed out when you ultimately hit pay-dirt and scale out your operations.

Founders need to prioritize what is important for their immediate goals, and security is often a logistical and financial cost that can be deferred. It’s yet another thing to look after, and you don’t have time for that, right?

But what if a secure-by-design approach to your startup can actually save you time, allow you to sleep at night, and even improve your image to potential investors?

What we noticed in the very early days of founding Assertiv is that manually setting up, managing and removing various staff, partners, contractors and customers was an anchor on our productivity. For example, setting up employees with an email, collaboration tools, code repositories, HR, accounting, lead management and various other tools is a menial but critical task. It is also a task that gets more frustrating each time it needs to be done. You have more pressing matters to attend to, but you definitely can’t ignore it.

Then there is the maintenance, people needing access to a new application, or removing someone from those applications if they finish up. It’s easy to forget, and a big risk if a former employee retains their access after leaving. Additionally, if you delay, you’re affecting your employee’s productivity.

Solutions are available to automate this process, ours being one of them, but not many are compatible with small business. Ours is, and for most startups, it’s free*. We have designed our solution from the ground up to be compatible with startups, we even use it ourselves to validate its value to similar businesses.

What identity management gives you is the ability to create a user once, assign them their job role, and they get access to the applications they need to do their job. If they leave, you can disable or remove them from one place and they will have all their access revoked.

How does this reflect well on investors? It shows that you are already thinking about the scalability of the business. Identity management is a cornerstone of any large business and implementing it later is hugely complex and expensive. Demonstrating that you have an identity strategy shows that your business is better prepared to take the next step in hitting growth targets.

There are many solutions available that solve this problem, but when doing your research, consider a solution that has no initial investment, is perfectly suited for small and medium businesses, and is designed to scale with you as your business grows. Most importantly, start thinking about the identity problem now, and thank yourself later when your business is automated, and you’re able to focus on more important matters.
